Speaker profile: Lynn Polson

Personal experience of Meniere's

Lynn Polson has had Meniere's disease since 1990. Lynn has experienced frequent vertigo attacks and has lost much of her hearing in both ears. Lynn Polson

Initially Lynn’s difficulty in hearing and speech discrimination caused her to lose much of her confidence, self-esteem and independence. She became a recluse in her own home having to forgo a promising teaching career.

But with encouragement from various organisations in the field Lynn strove to overcome the impact of her condition and prove that ‘you can learn to live with it’. Lynn has gone on to become a recognised ‘expert’ on Meniere's and a much sought after public speaker. Her determination to overcome or circumvent the many problems caused by Meniere's disease has made her an inspiration to others who find themselves in the same situation.

Counsellor

In July 1991 Lynn helped found the Meniere's Support Group of Victoria (MSGV). As the MSGV’s initial contact person she has greatly influenced the lives of many people.

Lynn counsels and acts as an advocate for people with Meniere's disease, their family members and their friends. She also helps people with acquired hearing loss. People who are newly diagnosed and uncertain of what the future may hold, particularly appreciate her counseling skills and personal insight into the problems associated with Meniere's and hearing loss. Lynn’s empathy and understanding play an important role in their coming-to-terms with a condition which impacts on all facets of their lives including employment, family relationships and social activities.

Author

In 1995 Lynn edited and published a book called “Understanding Meniere's Disease” in response to a recognised need for public access to detailed information about the various symptoms of Meniere's disease and the treatments available. (See the Books section of our online resource catalogue.) This book is filling a void worldwide, with orders being received from all Australian states, New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada and the US. It has been updated and reprinted in 2003.
